Stephen Badu’s journey as a professional footballer was far from a straight path. From the disappointment of being released from Tottenham’s academy at the age of 15 to the thrill of representing his country in international trials, Stephen faced a series of triumphs and challenges that would test even the toughest of athletes. But through it all, he never lost sight of his ultimate goal: to engage with the sport he loves and to help young people find their own path to success.
Now, as a secondary school teacher and life-coach for young footballers, Stephen is using his wealth of experience and knowledge to help the next generation of athletes understand the importance of taking care of both their mental and physical health. With his unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of life as a professional athlete, Stephen is well-equipped to help young people navigate the ups and downs of their own journey.
Many young athletes struggle with the mental side of performing, which subsequently affects their physical performance, it’s important that the tools given to train their physical ability are equalled with those given to train their mental ability. I want to help these young athletes understand that it's important to take care of their mental health. I want to give them the tools through my experience to help them, to become mentally strong and to have the confidence to overcome any adversities they may face. To understand that both the physical and mental self go hand in hand in reaching optimum performance and reaching one’s potential.

Stephen’s journey as a professional footballer took him from English trials to the pitches of Iceland, where he played for a year. He then spent three years playing for two clubs in Malta, where he suffered an ankle injury that would require extensive rehabilitation. But Stephen refused to let his injury define him, and he went on to play for four years in Germany.
Throughout his journey, Stephen faced financial struggles, feelings of isolation and loneliness, and the fear of failure. Of his time in football, he says: “My journey taught me that success on the field is not just about physical abilities, but about mental strength too”.
He believes that all athletes should be encouraged to talk about their feelings, build relationships and trust, and have a safe place to learn about themselves and their emotions. He also believes that the coach-athlete relationship and two-way communication are crucial for success, and that every young person should understand their own motivations and choices.
Stephen’s passion for helping young people to reach their full potential is clear, he says: “I want to share my experience, to ensure that young athletes and students have the tools and support they need, for optimal health and performance, both on and off the field.”
