Danny Sculthorpe: Highs Lows and Hypos

Danny Sculthorpe is a former England International rugby league player, who started his career as an academy player with Leeds Rhinos in 1996, before being sold to Warrington Wolves as part of a transfer deal in 1997. Danny went on to play for a number of other teams, including 5 years at Wigan Warriors. Danny also represented England in South Africa, with the under 21 squad and played against Australia in 2003. Danny was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes, as a teenager.

Danny’s book “Highs, Lows, and Hypos” is a memoir detailing his experience as a professional rugby player with type 1 diabetes. It is a heartfelt book and I highly recommend it. Here Danny summarises what I see as some of the fundamental take-home messages relating to his rugby career, diabetes journey and mental health:

Danny began playing rugby league at a young age and eventually played professionally for several clubs, including Wigan Warriors, Castleford Tigers, and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. He played in over 250 professional games, and he was known for his aggressive style of play and strong work ethic. Injuries were a significant challenge throughout his career, and he had to undergo multiple surgeries and rehab stints to stay on the field.

Danny was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager, shortly after he began his professional rugby career. Managing diabetes as a professional athlete was incredibly challenging, and he had to monitor his blood sugar levels constantly and adjust his insulin doses accordingly. He experienced several hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) episodes while playing rugby, some of which caused him to lose consciousness on the field.

Danny’s diabetes diagnosis and subsequent management had a significant impact on his mental health. He struggled with depression and anxiety and often felt isolated and misunderstood. He found it challenging to discuss his mental health struggles with others and feared being seen as weak or vulnerable. In his book, Sculthorpe emphasizes the importance of seeking help for mental health issues and encourages others to prioritize their mental wellbeing.

Danny’s book, “Highs, Lows, and Hypos” provides a candid and inspiring look at the challenges of managing diabetes as a professional athlete and the impact of chronic illness on mental health. Danny’s story highlights the importance of resilience, perseverance and seeking help when needed.

In it, Danny provides a few tips for athletes suffering with diabetes or mental ill health. These are based on his personal experience as an athlete with type-1 diabetes.

For athletes with diabetes, Danny emphasises the importance of careful planning and preparation when managing diabetes. This includes regularly monitoring blood sugar levels, carrying emergency supplies (such as glucose tablets), and communicating with coaches and teammates about diabetes management. He also encourages athletes with diabetes to prioritise their overall health and well-being, including getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise.

For athletes struggling with mental health issues, Danny urges them to be open and honest about their mental health struggles and to seek help when needed. This may include talking to a therapist, counsellor or trusted friend or family member. He also emphasises the importance of self-care and stress management techniques, such as mindfulness meditation, breathing exercises, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation.

Overall, Danny’s tips for athletes with diabetes or mental health issues centre around proactive management and self-care, as well as seeking help and support when needed. His advice highlights the importance of prioritising both physical and mental health in order to perform at one’s best both on and off the field.
